MP is one of the most important Italian companies working with precious metals. Between 2008 and 2009 120 workers had their wages suspended for several months. The manager Marcel Astolfi (who already had criminal record) disappeared from the factory, leaving the company with no one to run it: a very productive and healthy company, various open contracts, with more than one hundred years of history and more than one hundred employees-closed. Given the ambiguity of the situation, many of the workers foresaw bankruptcy. For the families involved, the economic situation became a matter of some concern. Indeed some family units are composed entirely of employees of the Metalli Preziosi. The loans they had to pay, the bills, the rent and the price of a decent quality of life clashed violently with their sudden lack of income. The workers organized themselves and occupied the factory with a permanent garrison. This lasted nearly two years and has seen all possible forms of struggle: meetings, sit-ins, demonstrations, events, and concerts. After a few months, thanks largely to the determination and energy of the workers, the "cassa integrazione" (temporary lay-off with a reduced salary) arrived. This was however after an infinite wait, which in turn had repercussions: there was a growing despair among those who were evicted from their houses, some of them forced to spend nights in the train station and unfortunately for one who saw no solution, a case of attempted suicide. Mr. Astolfi was finally convicted of fraudulent bankruptcy, and was sent to jail, but only for a short time, now he has only to sign on every so often. This game has not finished to play out; workers are still unemployed in "cassa integrazione", still cling to the hope that the Metalli Preziosi will soon be active. This is not just a story about the recession but also one about corrupt businesses, their decisions and their consequences. These are the latest photos visible from the factory in the period before March 2009, when production in the facility was blocked and marked with the seal of the police.

Una delle piu' importanti aziende italiane di lavorazione di metalli preziosi tra il 2008 e il 2009 sospese per vari mesi la retribuzione ai 120 lavoratori. Il dirigente Marcel Astolfi, gia' con precedenti penali, scomparve dalla fabbrica lasciando l'azienda a se stessa: una ditta assolutamente produttiva e sana, con nuove assunzioni, con piu' di cento anni di storia e piu' di cento dipendenti. Data l'ambiguita' della brusca interruzione molti di loro intravidero una fatale bancarotta fraudolenta. Per le famiglie la situazione economica divento' velocemente drammatica. Alcuni nuclei sono composti interamente da dipendenti della Metalli Preziosi. I mutui da pagare, le bollette, gli affitti e tutto il prezzo di una vita dignitosa si scontrarono violentemente con l' improvvisa mancanza di reddito. Grazie soprattutto alla determinazione e all'energia dei lavoratori dopo alcuni mesi arrivo' il sussidio della cassa integrazione. Un'attesa comunque interminabile: nel frattempo la disperazione cresceva tra chi era sfrattato per morosita', tra chi passava le notti in stazione dei treni e per chi purtroppo ha cercato di porre fine tentando il suicidio. Mr. Astolfi e' stato infine condannato per bancarotta fraudolenta, incarcerato ma ora ha solo l'obbligo di firma. La partita non e' ancora chiusa, i lavoratori sono tuttora in cassa integrazione con la speranza che la Metalli Preziosi possa tornare attiva in breve. Una storia che piu' che della "crisi" parla delle conseguenze delle scelte imprenditoriali corrotte. Queste sono le ultime foto visibili della fabbrica quando la produzione e' stata bloccata, prima che a Marzo 2009 venissero messi i sigilli di polizia. |
