Coney Island is a legendary place by the seaside, just an hour from Manhattan. At the beginning of the last century this place was called “Sodom by the sea” for its fame as the base of back packers, eccentrics and oddballs. Known for the old fun-fair “Luna Park”(which was partially constructed by Italians), Coney Island was known an attraction for the weird and wonderful shows it put on. In recent years it has changed greatly and the whole area has been restructured. The first week of June 2010 saw the opening of the new Luna Park, which has become once again a cheap meeting place especially for blacks, hispanics and those from the working classes. Coney Island still exudes a peculiar and extraordinary charm, a zone apart, inhabited by “contemporary freaks”.

Coney Island è un leggendario luogo sul mare, a un’ora di distanza da Manhattan. Alla fine del 19° secolo questo territorio era chiamato “La Sodoma del mare” per la sua fama di covo di scommettitori, e per le sue persone estremamente eccentriche e stravaganti. All’inizio del secolo passato alcuni italiani costruirono un grande parco divertimenti, chiamato “Luna Park” e Coney Island divenne un’attrazione per i suoi show bizzarri. Negli ultimi anni è fondamentalmente tutto cambiato e l’intera area è stata ristrutturata. Durante la prima settimana di Giugno 2010 ha avuto luogo a Coney Island l’apertura di un nuovo Luna Park, che ha fatto diventare la zona nuovamente un luogo di incontri, economico, popolare, vissuto soprattutto da neri ed ispanici. Coney Island mantiene ancora un particolare fascino, ed è ancora vissuta da “freaks contemporanei”. |
